Whether a permit is required to build a deck in King City?
Decks that are not attached to a residential home and are less than 10 sq.m. in size do not need a building permit. Please note: Decks larger than 10 sq.m. and all decks attached to a dwelling house that are more than 600 mm (2′-0″) above ground level require a building permit.
However, please note that you must still comply with all applicable laws, including the King Township Zoning By-law and, if applicable, the Ontario Building Code.
Which are Zoning By-law Standards in King City?
The Comprehensive Countryside Zoning By-law 2022-053 was adopted on September 26, 2022 and applies to all land in the Township of King with the exception of land within the urban areas of King City, Nobleton and Schomberg. Bylaw 2022-053 is currently being challenged at the Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT). For those properties that are subject to the appeals, Zoning By-law 74-53, as amended, will also apply to those properties. To confirm whether the lands are subject to appeals, please refer to Schedule A of By-law 2022-053. Land within the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan Area and Greenbelt Plan Area is also subject to By-law 2005-23.
